Could people become more powerful over their lifetimes or were they each born into a position that didn't change? The Examination System allowed ancient Chinese to become more powerful over their lifetimes. The system was an attempt to recruit men on the basis of merit, not of the family or political connection. Education was highly regarded in ancient China. The success in the examination system was the basis of social status and education was the key to success in the system. If a person passed the examination, his entire family will be raised to a higher social status, then will receive more prestige and privilege. |
